My pride & joy, my sidepiece. Though it’s not fully shown, this tattoo represents so much. In 2005 my father passed away from cancer, leaving behind, my mother, two sisters and I. After he passed away my family and I had to become self-sufficient and strong as soon as possible. Each piece in the tattoo has it’s own meaning. For instance the phoenix in the center of the tattoo represents me. A phoenix is known to burn, but only to rise again. Once my dad died, apart of me went with him, but I knew I had to rise again for the sake of my family. There are also four flowers surrounding the phoenix. Each flower is the birth flower of my family. The rose and lily of the valley are placed toward the bottom of my sidepiece which represents my sisters. Throughout the whole ordeal, they were my base and my support, so they sit below the phoenix to show that. The flower nearer to my back is a carnation which is my mother’s birth flower. Placed to show she supports us while taking on her role as a mother, by lifting us to be better. The finally flower is not seen, but it sits near my breast, close to heart above the phoenix, carnation, rose and lily of the valley. That flower is a chrysanthemum which is my father’s birth flower. Placed above all to show that he may be gone, but he still watches over the family. In the end, my family’s love surrounds me. This tattoo means everything to me and it was done at Second Skin, by the ever talented Derek Bunkley.
